On a recent episode of The Ray & Dregs Podcast, NHL analyst Ray Ferraro expressed his disappointment with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ activity in the free agency market, noting that the team has declined rather than improved.
Ferraro’s assessment appears to reflect his concerns about the direction of the team’s off-season moves. Ferraro bluntly said:
“In my opinion, the Leafs are worse today than they were at the end of the season. I don’t think there’s really any question about that.”
One specific move that Ferraro examined was the acquisition of Ryan Reaves. Tough as nails, the enforcer has a reputation as the most physically intimidating player in the NHL. Ferraro, however, questioned Reaves’ influence on the Leafs. Ferraro explained:
“Without a doubt, Reeves is the most physically intimidating guy in the NHL because he loves his role…he won’t make the Leafs tougher, he won’t play 15min/g, and his style of play won’t seep into how other players play more aggressively or more aggressively.”
Ferraro also expressed doubts about the potential impact of the Toronto Maple Leafs’ pursuit of defenseman John Klingberg. While acknowledging Klingberg’s ability to move the puck effectively, Ferraro raised concerns about his defensive performance.
“Defensively, steadily and analytically he was one of the worst defenders in the league last year, he moves the puck, he has never been a strong defender,” Ferraro added.
Ferraro also raised his doubts about Klingberg’s game-changing abilities.
“I don’t like John Klingberg enough to change the rules of the game.”
Ferraro certainly had critical notes about Brad Treliving’s moves in free agency and the potential effects on the Toronto Maple Leafs’ performance next season. We’ll have to see how these acquisitions shape the team’s future on the ice.
Tyler Bertuzzi joins the Toronto Maple Leafs in free agency, leaving the Boston Bruins
Tyler Bertuzzi’s departure from the Boston Bruins in free agency is significant not only because he’s leaving the team, but also because he’s joining one of their biggest rivals in the Eastern Conference.
The Toronto Maple Leafs announced Sunday that they have signed Bertuzzi to a one-year, $5.5 million contract.
Boston general manager Don Sweeney maintained that the prospect of Bertuzzi returning to the Bruins was slim due to contract terms and offers from other teams. Sweeney appreciated Bertuzzi’s contributions to the team and wished him well in his new endeavours.
The Bruins acquired Bertuzzi from the Detroit Red Wings before the 2022-23 trade deadline in exchange for two draft picks. During his time with the Bruins, Bertuzzi played an important role, tallying four goals and 12 assists in 21 games. In 50 total games played for both Detroit and Boston, he scored eight goals and had 22 assists.
