Eight people were arrested Sunday in connection with a violent clash between two communities in Brahmanan district of Uttar Pradesh’s Hapur state.

According to the police, a heated argument started between the Brahmanan’s neighbors over the placement of a bullock cart outside the house owned by a Hindu family on Saturday. They were pacified after the intervention of the local population.

However, the police said that dozens of Muslim men gathered again at the site on Sunday and started throwing stones at the house owned by Primlata, injuring six people including them. They were taken to a local hospital after police rushed to the scene and dispersed stone-throwing demonstrators.

Premlata, 50, filed a first media report on Sunday at Kotwali Police Station against 10 identified persons and 40 unidentified persons in this regard. She claimed that she had reported the brewing tension between her family and their Muslim neighbors to the police at Garh Gate Police Station on Saturday night but they took no action.

We have begun the process of invoking the NSA against the defendants and eight of them have already been sent to prison. The Kanwar Yatra is scheduled to start today and that is why we had to nip in the bud any possibility of community disharmony spilling over into other areas of the city,” Abhishek Verma, Superintendent of Police, Hapur said.

Three policemen at Garh Gate police outpost were sent to Police Lines by Verma for not paying heed to the complaint on Saturday night.

The Provincial Armed Police (PAC) has been deployed with the local police in the volatile area. Hapur Police has announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for each of the fleeing accused whose posters have been plastered at Kotwali Police Station and nearby places.

“A round-the-clock vigil is being maintained in the area and police along with PAC men are marching in the street to instill a sense of security among the citizens. Raids are underway to arrest the fugitive accused,” Verma said.

Those who were sent to Hapur Prison in judicial confinement for 14 days were identified as Shah Rukh, Mohammad Omar, Naushad, Asif, Shafyan, Ikhlaq, Ashraf and Sanu.
