Senior England seamstress Stuart Broad expects Australian captain Pat Cummins to consider his appeal against Jonny Bairstow on day five of the Second Test at Lord’s. The 37-year-old noted that the crowd’s reaction that day was unlike any he had witnessed before.

England’s cricketers vented their frustration over the controversial Bairstow incident on the fifth day. With the Yorkshire cricketer out of the crease after clearing a ball from Cameron Green, Alex Carey bowled the stumps with an underarm throw. The third official ruled, astonishing the English players and the crowd.

In his column for the Daily Mail, Broad stated that he would be surprised if Cummins didn’t think he got it wrong:

“In the end, Cummins is a really fine guy and I’d be surprised, once the passions subside, if he didn’t sit back and think, ‘I got it wrong’, even though his base line at the time was Test match wins. The Lord’s crowd are clearly fans of Huge cricket and I’ve never seen such a reaction before. They were so angry.”

In his post-match presentation, Cummins called it completely fair play. However, his counterpart Ben Stokes claimed that he would not resort to such tactics to win the match and questioned Australia’s sportsmanship.

While the Nottinghamshire seamstress admitted emotions may have taken over, he expected at least one Australian player to stand up against Bairstow’s sending off. Wide added:

“What struck me, and what I said to the Australians I could not believe when we left the field at lunch, was that there was not a senior among them—and I understand so much in the emotion of the game that the bowler and the bouncer thought ‘this out’—I wondered what they had done.”

Australia won by 43 runs at Lord’s, giving them a healthy 2-0 lead in the five-Test series. The Third Test begins on 6 July at Headingley.
