Retail tomato prices jumped to 155 rupees per kilogram in major cities of the country due to supply disruptions caused by rainfall in the producing area, according to official data.
In the central regions, retail tomato prices prevailed in the range of Rs 58-148 per kg, with the highest price in Kolkata at Rs 148 per kg and the lowest in Mumbai at Rs 58 per kg.
In Delhi and Chennai, the prices were 110 rupees per kg and 117 rupees per kg respectively.
According to data maintained by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, the average retail price in India was Rs 83.29 per kg, with a conditional price of Rs 100 per kg.
The data showed that the highest price was 155 rupees per kilogram in Siliguri, West Bengal.
Meanwhile, in the national capital, local vendors sell tomatoes in the range of 120-140 rupees per kg depending on the quality and location.
“We bought the best tomatoes at 120 rupees per kg from Azadpur wholesale market and sold at 140 rupees per kg in retail,” said local seller Jyotish Kumar Jha in Paschim Vihar.
Supply disruptions occurred in the past two weeks from producing states, as harvesting and transportation were affected.
The government emphasized that the current hike in tomato prices is a seasonal phenomenon, and around this time, prices generally remain high. Prices are expected to decrease in the next 15 days and return to normal within a month.
