It has been reported that Kylian Mbappe will extend his contract with Paris Saint-Germain if Real Madrid fail to sign him this summer.

The French star came close to joining Los Blancos last summer as a free agent, only to extend his stay in Paris for another two years. The new contract included an option for another 12 months, which the player did not wish to exercise.

It is said that Paris Saint-Germain put 200 million euros on Mbappe, but Real Madrid wants to play smart and is waiting for 2024 to sign him on a free transfer. However, according to journalist Josep Pedrerol (h/t PSGTalk), they may not be allowed to do so.

The Spanish journalist says that Mbappe will renew his contract with Paris Saint-Germain this summer if Real Madrid does not sign him. It remains to be seen if a potential exit clause will be included in this new deal that would allow him to join Real Madrid in the future.

The La Liga giants are in desperate need of a world-class striker following Karim Benzema’s move to Al Ittihad last month. Joselu, 33, has been signed on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy for €1.5m to provide cover up front.

Lionel Messi made Real Madrid’s recommendation to Kylian Mbappe before PSG’s exit

Xavier Grimault, a journalist at RMC Sport, said that Lionel Messi had recommended Kylian Mbappe to join Barcelona or Real Madrid before leaving Paris Saint-Germain.

The legendary Argentine playmaker left as a free agent last month and is set to join Major League Soccer’s Inter Miami. Before leaving the Parc des Princes, he wanted Mbappe to pursue another project. Grimolt said:

“The PSG project is not the same in turn at the moment. Mbappe has all the cards in his hand. Before leaving, Lionel Messi urged him to leave too. He wanted him to join Barcelona… if not Real Madrid. That, as I said, It goes with the flow of history.”

Paris Saint-Germain has invested heavily in its team since Qatar Sports Investments in 2011 and has enjoyed massive success domestically. They signed Neymar from Barcelona in 2017 from Barcelona for a world record fee of €222 million.

A year later, they paid €180m to sign Kylian Mbappe from Monaco on a permanent basis. Messi’s arrival as a free agent in 2021 was another milestone for the French giants.

However, despite huge investments, they failed to win the UEFA Champions League.
