July 3 was the hottest day on record globally, according to data from the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction.
The global average temperature was 17.01°C (62.62°F), surpassing the August 2016 record of 16.92°C (62.46°F) as heatwaves spread across the globe.
The southern United States is suffering under a sweltering heat dome. In China, the ongoing heatwave continued, with temperatures above 35°C (95°F).
North Africa saw temperatures close to 50 degrees Celsius (122 Fahrenheit). Even Antarctica has recorded abnormally high temperatures. Ukraine’s Vernadsky Research Base on the Argentine islands broke the July temperature record with a high of 8.7 degrees Celsius (47.6 Fahrenheit).
“This is not a milestone that we should celebrate,” said climate scientist Frederik Otto.
