We do not know what happened and why Zubair was arrested. “And we have absolutely no idea what needs to be done now and what will happen to us and him,” said Noor Muhammad Sheikh, 63, who is now retired after working in a foundry in Pune for many years.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) arrested Noor Muhammad’s son (39) for “promoting terrorist activities at the behest of ISIS” in what the Central Counter-Terrorism Agency described as an “intelligence-led operation”.
Zubair, who worked for an IT company in the past, and three others arrested with him from Mumbai and Thane, are accused of “promoting terrorist activities of ISIS, provoking and operating a sleeper cell in Maharashtra” among other charges.
Some officers came to the house around 3:30-4 on Monday morning. Al-Zubayr, his wife and three children were here and I had no idea what was going on. The officers started searching lockers and desks everywhere. I’ve heard of such raids for income tax or ED, so I thought it would be those agencies. But I wondered what my son should do with them. “We later found out that they were NIA officers with a warrant to search our place,” Noor Muhammad told The Indian Express at his home in Vazir Cascade, a residential complex in Kondhwa.
Noor Muhammad said, “After two to three hours of searching, they took Zubair with them, and then, during the day, we learned that he had been taken to Mumbai and arrested by the NIA.”
According to Zubair’s father, the family moved into this apartment about four months ago. We used to live in Khadki earlier. We moved to Kondhwa 10 years ago. We have changed our homes several times since then but only in Kondhwa.” Asked about the reason for the multiple shifts, Noor Mohamed said he did not want to talk about it.
According to the National Intelligence Agency, its raids came after reliable inputs that the four arrested suspects and their comrades “recruited young men and trained them to manufacture explosive devices and weapons.”
In a statement, the agency said, the defendants also shared related materials, including DIY kits among themselves to manufacture improvised explosive devices and manufacture small arms, pistols, etc. Nusseibeh.
Asked about the allegations, Noor Mohamed said: “It’s all very confusing. I can’t believe it. Zubair used to work for an IT company in the past and lost his job three to four years ago. He’s been doing small business since then and he’s also been going up and down At the same time for different jobs. He started working for a company only three to four months ago… I don’t know what company it is and what his job is but it’s somewhere near Shekhali (in the suburbs).”
The NIA statement also claimed that “its teams seized several incriminating materials, such as electronic devices and several documents related to the Islamic State, while searching the homes of the accused.” “The seized materials clearly revealed the strong and effective links of the accused with Daesh and their efforts to motivate vulnerable youths to further the terrorist organisation’s anti-India agenda,” the statement read.
Asked about his son’s family, Noor Muhammad said that Zubair got married eight years ago. “He has three children – two daughters and a son. His wife has gone to her parents’ house with the boys after all this. My other two sons have gone to Mumbai and are talking to a lawyer. I hope things will clear up soon.”
