A farmer in Karnataka on Wednesday alleged that tomatoes worth 2.5 lakh rupees were stolen from her farm. Thieves allegedly loosened 50-60 bags of tomatoes from a farmer’s agricultural field in Goni Somanahalli village under Belur Taluk in Karnataka’s Hassan district on Tuesday night.
The farmer, Darini, and her family had planted the tomatoes on two acres of land and were planning to take the yield to market next week.
Dharini told media professionals, “We incurred huge losses in the bean harvest and borrowed to grow tomatoes. We had a good harvest, and by the way, the prices were also high.” She added that in addition to taking 50-60 bags of tomatoes, the thieves destroyed the remaining crop.
On Darini’s complaint, a theft case is filed at Halebidu Police Station.
A police officer at Halebidu Police Station said, “We have heard of the areca nut and other commercial crops being stolen, but we have never heard of someone stealing tomatoes. This is the first time such a case has been reported in our police station.”
Notably, tomato prices have skyrocketed across the state, with prices in Bengaluru ranging from Rs 101 to Rs 121 per kg. The price hike was attributed to the sudden rise in temperatures in the months of March and April which led to pest attacks on tomato crops, which led to lower yields and higher market rates.
