Fatehpur district administration has partially demolished the home of a 21-year-old man who was arrested for the rape and murder of a 19-year-old woman from a different community last month. Officials said the “illegal” part of the house was demolished after the family failed to respond to a notice sent to them earlier.

The demolition began on June 27, two days after Sikandar Khan’s arrest. Police have also booked Sikander Khan’s 55-year-old father and 25-year-old elder brother on charges of criminal conspiracy. The two surrendered before a local court on 3 July.

The house plan has not been passed from the competent authority. Notifications have been issued to the family, but they have failed to provide a response. On June 27, part of the house was demolished. We had to stop the demolition for fear of damaging the neighbor’s house. “We resumed the demolition campaign on Tuesday and the remaining illegal part of the house was destroyed in the presence of engineers and officials,” said Subdivision Judge (Fatehpur) Awadesh Nigam.

According to the police, the 19-year-old woman from Gujarat came to Fatehpur with her parents last month to attend the wedding of a relative. The police added that the accused, who runs a travel agency in Fatehpur, knew the woman because they had been in contact with each other for the past three years.

On June 22, the woman disappeared from the wedding venue. She was found the next day from a nearby construction site with head injuries. She was admitted to the hospital. During the investigation, the police found that she had been in contact with a local youth, Sikandar Khan. Her last contact before she disappeared was with Sikandar. A police officer said that the police tracked him down and arrested him on June 25. A day later, the woman died in the hospital.
