Police said two GST intelligence officers in Hyderabad were assaulted and kidnapped when they arrived at a scrap warehouse on Wednesday to raid the premises and investigate a fake GST registration. The Ratchakunda police arrested a junk dealer and three of his associates in connection with the incident.
According to the officials, the incident took place in Krantinagar and Sarurnagar and the detainees were identified as Syed Feroz, the owner of the scrap unit, and his companions, Syed Mujib, Sheikh Imtiaz and Syed Mushir.
B Sai Sri, Deputy Commissioner of Police LP Nagar said the accused demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh for their release to be arranged. Police received a complaint at around 10:30am from GST officers who were informed of the assault and kidnapping of two of their officers.
DGGI (Directorate General of Goods and Services Tax Intelligence) has received a tip regarding a scrap unit using a fake GST registration number. According to the police, when the two officers arrived at the site and started investigations, the four accused sparked a heated argument with the two, and they grabbed the officials’ ID cards and shoved them into a Toyota Fortuner and drove away.
“The accused demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh to arrange their release. One of the officers called his superior on the phone and informed him about the matter.”
The officers alerted the Ratchakunda Police. Special police teams quickly tracked down the kidnapped officers based on CCTV images and technical support to rescue them from near Rajeev Chowk, four kilometers from the depot, by noon.
The detainees were held in judicial custody. Police are looking for another fugitive suspect.
