In the wake of allegations that doctors came late to OPDs, making people wait for a long time, Tamil Nadu Health Minister Jagandeep Singh Bedi has written a letter to all district collectors to ensure that the Deans, Joint Director of Medical Services and Deputy Director of Health Services strictly adhere to punctuality. .
Recently, a leading daily newspaper in the country reported scheduling irregularities, resulting in patients, who travel long distances for treatment, waiting for hours.
In his July 4 letter, Bede said that providing equitable, affordable, accessible and quality healthcare services to all people in the state is one of the primary goals of the hospitals in the state.
“In order to achieve this, starting outpatient services in a timely manner in all government medical college hospitals, government hospitals, primary health centers, and government dispensaries is very crucial and important to avoid any undue delay in benefiting from health services, especially at a time of need.”
The Minister of Health has listed the approved appointments for OP services.
In Government Medical College Hospitals, the doctors/staff in charge of the OP during the day of admission to the respective department should be available from 7.30 am to noon.
Other doctors must be in from 9 am to 4 pm. The Resident Medical Officer (RMO) must be present at 7 am to supervise the OP and arrangements, while the Medical Supervisors must be present at 8 am and available in the emergency services.
In Government Headquarters Hospital and other Government Hospitals, the general operating times are from 7.30 am to noon. It has been noted that the 24-hour duty physicians must attend the evening OP from 3pm to 5pm.
For dentists and physiotherapists, operating times are from 8 am to 1 pm and in the evening from 3 pm to 5 pm. The Chief Medical Officer (Management) has been instructed to be present from 7.30am to 1.30pm, and again from 3pm to 5pm.
Similarly at government primary health centers, OP appointments are directed and may vary depending on the number of medical officers available.
