A police officer said that the Legal Aid Act was seized under various sections of the Iraqi Penal Code, including wrongful confinement, rape, and others.

Ahead of the July 8 elections in West Bengal’s panchayat, an FIR has been registered against Indian Secular Front MLA Naushad Siddique for allegedly having sex with a woman to whom he promised to marry, police say.

The FIR was registered at Bowbazar Police Station after the woman lodged a complaint against the legislator, alleging that he “wrongfully handcuffed” her at his office on BB Ganguly Street in Kolkata a year and a half ago, and had sex with her in a promise of marriage, a senior officer said.

He said the Legal Aid Act has been seized under various sections of the Iraqi Penal Code, including wrongful confinement, rape, and others. We started investigating a friend based on a complaint received from a woman.

Referring to the complaint, the policeman said the woman also alleged that Siddiqui “continued a sexual relationship with her, and made false promises of marriage.”

Later, when the woman pressures him into marriage, he begins to avoid her. She also alleged that Siddiqui and his associates began threatening her with dire consequences, the officer said. Siddique represents the Bhangar Assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas, which has seen violence in the run-up to rural elections in the state. Police said the woman initially lodged her complaint with the New Town Police Station.

He added that Bowbazar Police Station had received the complaint along with a referral letter from DC, New Town Division, Bidhannagar Police Commissioneration. In the lead-up to the elections of the three panchayat, 10 lives have been lost so far and several others have been injured, as clashes between political parties erupt across the state.
