Days after the main institute came under fire for refusing to accept students from schools where the language of instruction was Bengali or other regional languages, Loreto College in Kolkata issued an apology and scrapped the rule.
The important point: As admissions for undergraduate courses in West Bengal opened on 1st July, Loreto College has stated in its notice that its medium of instruction is “English only” and applicants from Bengali medium schools will not be accepted. As criticism of the rule poured in, the college on Tuesday issued a new statement, calling the policy an “unintended error.”
What does the admission notice say: “Examinations are to be answered in English only. Our popular Open Shelf library has references/textbooks and journals only in English for all subjects other than colloquial Bengali and Hindi,” said the Women’s College previously.
“From past experience, we strongly recommend that candidates who belong to vernacular middle schools choose to study in institutions where the language of instruction is bilingual. Students whose medium of instruction in class 11 was vernacular were not considered for admission.”
reaction: The college’s language bar was called out for “blatant discrimination”, with many social media users seeing the ad as “elitist” and “anti-Bengali”. The pro-Bangla group Bangla Pokkho organized a demonstration outside the college to protest the move.
Cancellation: Three days after its initial circular, Loreto College issued an unqualified apology for the “inadvertent error” and rescinded the policy with immediate effect.
Loreto College has a rich legacy of service and comprehensive education over 100 years in Bengal. This last admission policy notice does not reflect the values we hold dear… We recommit ourselves to serving all parts of Bengal as we have always done.”
