Amarnath yatra has been stopped for the second day now due to mudslide caused by heavy rain

The suspension of the Amarnath Yatra for the second day in a row due to bad weather across Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday forced pilgrims to stay at the Bhagwati Nagar Base Camp in Jammu, officials said. According to officials, new batches of pilgrims were not allowed to leave Jammu to embark on the yatra journey due to the closure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway. They added that a mudslide caused by heavy rain hit the national highway near Ramban in the early hours, which led to the suspension of traffic.

More than 80,000 pilgrims have performed obedience rites at the sacred cave shrine in southern Kashmir in the Himalayas since the beginning of the yatra on July 1. The yatra was suspended on Friday after heavy rain, especially along the twin paths – the traditional 48-kilometre Pahalgam route. In Anantnag District and the 14 km Baltal Road in Ganderbal District. “No new batch of yatras were allowed (to leave) from Bhagwati Nagar base camp this morning in view of the yatra hanging in the valley and inclement weather,” a police official told PTI.

On Friday, a group of 4,600 pilgrims were stopped at Chanderkote along the National Highway in Ramban district to avoid crowding at the Pahalgam base camp after the temporary yatra was suspended. All pilgrims are safe and sheltering at stops along the way, officials said, adding that Elytra will resume after the weather improves.

The Met Office has forecast moderate to heavy rain, accompanied by thunderstorms, under the influence of monsoon and westerly disturbances across Jammu and Kashmir until Sunday. The annual 62-day pilgrimage to the 3,888-meter-high cave shrine in southern Kashmir in the Himalayas started from the twin trails of Pahalgam and Paltal on July 1st. Elytra’s journey is scheduled to end on August 31.
