Singh said that although the situation in JFK has improved, full normalcy will only be achieved after the restoration of the political process and the establishment of the state. He emphasized that the emergence of the opposition as a force is good for democracy.
Veteran Congress leader Karan Singh said the political process should be restored in Jammu and Kashmir, while he was fighting for snap assembly elections in the union territory as well as the re-establishment of his state.
He also acknowledged that the law and order situation is “better” in Jammu and Kashmir, saying there has been a cessation of lockdown calls and “freedom fatwas”. But it cannot be claimed to have “100 percent complete control,” Singh told PTI in an interview.
The Congress party leader said that “at some point in time, the political process must be restored”. The state must be restored. Only then (when the state and political process is restored), can we say that this complete normalcy has begun in (Jammu and Kashmir), ”Singh said.
He pointed out that the elections for the panchayat had already been held, and now it was necessary to hold the elections for the assembly as soon as possible.
It is the House of Representatives elections that will take place now. They should be held as soon as possible. The government decides when to do so. Singh said.
In August 2019, the government revoked Article 370, which had granted special status to the former state of Jammu and Kashmir, dividing it into the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh.
Asked about peace and normalcy in Jammu and Kashmir, he said that calls for lockdown and “freedom fatwas” have stopped, which leads to a better environment.
Invitations (closure) and freedom fatwas are now closed. Law and order is better. But we cannot say that everything is 100 percent under control. Something can happen at any time. But (the situation) has improved,” Singh said.
The conference leader also mentioned that development projects are being implemented in the region and mentioned those for Dal Lake and under the Smart Cities programme. On the current political developments, Singh said that under democracy, both the government and the opposition should be strong. He considered the emergence of a strong opposition a positive development.
In a democracy, the government must be strong and the opposition must also be strong. The Congress leader said it was good that the opposition was showing strength.
On whether the opposition meeting on June 23 in Patna indicates the growing strength of the opposition, Singh indicated that it is too early to draw conclusions. “Let’s see. Too soon to say. Let’s see what happens in the coming days.”
More than a dozen opposition parties, including the Congress party, recently gathered in Patna, Bihar state, to form a united front against the BJP. In response to a question about the LG-led government of Jammu and Kashmir’s announcement of granting five marla of land to the landless, he said if it is subject to the state, then this is a positive step.
He supported the allocation of land for the landless, stressing the importance of a peace process involving cooperation from all concerned parties.
