A person was killed after a fire broke out in a residential tower in Santa Cruz (east) in Mumbai. The incident was reported around 1.45am on Saturday.
The deceased has been identified as Nagin Lashu, 86. Lakhu inhaled smoke and was taken to VN Desai Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
According to the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB), the fire started on the third floor of the eight-storey building, inside a locked flat.
MFB officials said smoke filled the third floor corridor. They also confirmed that the flames were extinguished by the residents of the building.
“The fire was put out by the general public by breaking the lock and key of the apartment where the fire started. Local residents used buckets of water and household fire extinguishers to put out the flames.”
“After our arrival, we used high-pressure hose lines to completely extinguish the fire. However, local residents did damage control and the fire did not spread.”
