Mumbai Police have arrested four people for allegedly stealing a six thousand kilogram iron bridge over a bank in a western suburb here, an official said Saturday.
An official from Bangor Nagar Police Station said the 90-foot metal structure in Malad (West) was put up by the utility company Adani Electric to carry huge power cables.
He noted that after a permanent bridge was built over the drain, the temporary structure was moved to another location in the area a few months ago. However, the temporary bridge was found missing on June 26, after which the power company filed a complaint with the police, according to the official.
During the investigation, the police found that the bridge was last seen in place on June 6. Since there were no CCTV cameras at the site, the police checked the CCTV footage installed in the vicinity and found a large vehicle moving in the direction. from the bridge on June 11, the official said.
The police then tracked down the car from its registration number. The official said, “The car was equipped with gas-cutting machines that were used to dismantle the bridge and steal the iron, which weighs six thousand kilograms.” Further police investigation led to a company employee who had been awarded a contract to build the bridge.
The official said the employee and three of his accomplices were arrested by police last week. He added that the stolen materials were recovered from the site.
