After a bright start to his career, Prithvi Shaw is now down the winning streak in India, but the Mumbai teenager said on Saturday he is relying on his natural “aggressive” game to score runs and earn his place back in the national team.
Shaw last appeared for India in a T20I match against Sri Lanka in Colombo in July 2021.
“Personally I feel I don’t have to change my style of game, but I’m a bit smarter than I am. I can’t bat like Pujara sir or Pujara sir can’t bat like me.
“So, what I’m trying to do is those things that got me here, for example, the slam, I don’t like to change that,” Shaw said after West Zone’s Dulip Cup semi-final against Central Zone in Allure.
Shaw said he was looking forward to playing as many matches as possible at this point in his career.
The 23-year-old said every round would be very important to him in his comeback bid.
“I think any match for me now is as important as any match. Even if I am playing the Duleep Trophy or my match in Mumbai, I feel it is very important for me to give my best,” Shaw said.
Ideally, Shaw would have liked to have been among the big runs in the Duleep Trophy semi-final but couldn’t convert his 25 and 26 into impactful knocks. Shaw admitted that the conditions were a bit difficult for the speculators but he devised a plan to survive and run.
“It’s not that you can always be perfect but I try to work harder after those kinds of things happen (not running). T20 is a little more so, but it’s a similar mentality. Not in the same way as in T20 with me when I play red-ball cricket Also,” Shaw said.
“What I should try,” he said, “is to play with the pitchers, distract them, force them to give you the ball you want and not the ball they want.”
However, Shaw found a glimmer of hope in his form in the previous Ranji season. He scored 595 runs from six matches for Mumbai at an average of 59.50.
Now, Shaw wants to carry his red-ball cricket format to other formats as well.
“Everything was going well in red-ball cricket last year itself after I scored 370 (379 against Assam). With white-ball, especially IPL, I feel everything is going in the opposite direction. You only have 20 runs to think about batting.” I am speaking to Sir Sourav (Ganguly), Sir Ricky (Ponting) and Praveen (Amr) Sir (at Delhi Capitals).
“But red-ball cricket is where the test takes place and it shows how much you can reach the biggest level,” Shaw signed.
