India’s Birmingham Commonwealth Games silver medalist in the men’s 3000m hurdles, Avinash Sable, will compete in the Silesia Diamond League next week in Poland, said national athletics coach Jaiver Singh.
The one-day Polish Diamond League is scheduled for Sunday 16 July and will be Sable’s third highly competitive one-day event this year. Earlier, he participated in the second leg of Rabat and Stockholm from the 2023 Diamond League.
Sable will skip the upcoming Asian Athletics Championships, scheduled to be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from July 12-16, to focus on the World Championships in Athletics.
According to Javier Singh, Silesia will be a good opportunity for Sable to compete with the best in the business before the Budapest World Athletics Championships, starting August 19 in Hungary.
“The experience gained in the highly competitive Diamond League will be a great advantage when he steps on the track to world-class competition in Hungary,” said the national coach.
The 28-year-old national record holder in the men’s 3,000-meter hurdles finished fifth at the Stockholm Diamond League, held July 2 in Sweden, with a time of 8:21.88 seconds.
“Due to the bad weather, the race did not go according to the expected lines,” said Jaiver Singh. “(Sable) was decent, but the rain-soaked track ruined the chances of a quality race.”
A season’s best for sables of 8:17:18 seconds was set on May 28th at the Diamond League in Rabat, Morocco. He finished tenth.
Avinash Sable ran a personal best of 8:11.20 seconds, which he set on his way to winning a silver medal in the 3000m hurdles at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Earlier in May, Sable improved his 5,000-meter national record to 13:19.30 seconds in California.
“After competing in Poland, Sable will return to his training base in Colorado Springs in the United States to prepare for the IAAF World Championships in August,” added the national coach.
At the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games, scheduled to be held in September in China, Avinash Sable is set to compete in both the 3000m and 5000m steeplechase events.
“At the Continental Games, he has a good chance of winning medals in both the 3000m hurdles and 5000m track events,” added the national athletics coach. “At the World Championships in Athletics, he will only focus on the 3,000m hurdles.”
