In a move to enhance recreational spaces in the city, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is set to open five new swimming pools in the city. While the civic body announced on Saturday that one of the swimming pools located in Wadala will open on August 1, four more are scheduled to open by August 15.
According to civic authority officials, the Wadala swimming pool which is set to open on August 1 was previously owned by the Mumbai Fire Brigade. With its specification of 25m x 15m, the pool has a capacity of 7 liters.
Meanwhile, other spaces are located in Vikhroli, Worli with two more coming in Andheri – East and West. “These complexes have been in the works for four or five years. We plan to open them to the public by Independence Day,” a senior official added.
BMC will contract with contractors for pool security and maintenance.
Earlier this year, the civic body completed works on two new swimming pools in Malad and Dahisar. These pools are located in Chacha Nehru Garden in Malad (West) and Gyandhara Garden in Dahisar.
Besides, BMC has swimming pool in Dadar (Shivaji Park), Kandivli, Dahisar, Mulund, Chembur and Ghatkopar. Of these pools, two are Olympic size and meet international standards for swimming.
In an effort to increase the number of recreational spaces in the city, the civic body proposed the construction of new swimming pools in 2018. With the outbreak of the pandemic, the pace of work has slowed. Earlier in 2022, the swimming pool in Candivial was opened by the civic body, which was scheduled to open during the summer of 2020.
These upcoming recreational spaces will push the total number of pools managed by the body to 13.
For the record, in December, BMC began monthly and quarterly membership plans for its nationals in its pools. Earlier, citizens could only get annual membership. BMC has also launched a website through which citizens can avail swimming pool membership directly and there are facilities for candidates who are waiting list in the system.
