A day after the killing of three members of a family in Ludhiana’s New Janakpuri district sent shockwaves through the city, police on Saturday resolved the case with the arrest of a neighbour. On Friday, Chaman Lal, 74, his wife Surender Kaur, 70, and mother Surjeet Kaur (Jeetu), 95, were found dead inside their home.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, Ludhiana Police Commissioner Mandeep Singh Sidhu said the case was resolved within 24 hours with the arrest of Robin alias Munna (42), who was living nearby. Siddhu said that Robin bore a grudge against Surinder because she used to make fun of him for not having a child despite being married for more than five years. So he hacked three of them to death with a hammer and then tried to set the house on fire to stage it as a fire.
CB Seidu said Ruben was arrested for questioning late Friday and confessed to the crime. “He told during interrogation that he and his wife did not have children even after five years of marriage, which Surinder Kaur used to mock him regularly even in front of other neighbours. He was offended so he decided to kill her but ended up killing the trio,” said the CP.
He added that the defendants also tried to destroy evidence. The CP said he tried to set the house on fire after the crime by puncturing a gas pipe and lighting incense sticks to show that the trio had died in a fire but by the way, the fire did not catch fire and the house did not catch fire.
The police also found a video camera, seven tapes, a mobile phone, a bag and some documents that the accused, a rickshaw driver, stole from the house.
Police said that during interrogation, the accused said that on Thursday morning when he was feeding chickens on his rooftop, Surinder went upstairs and harassed him again. He got angry, took a hammer, and climbed up the common wall around 6.15am to get into their house. However, Core was in the bathroom so he hid and waited for her to come out. Attack and kill her as soon as she gets out. Soon, after hearing her cries, Lal and Jeetu wake up and first hacks Lal and then kills Geetu.
City JCP Saumya Mishra said that after the crime, the accused opened the handle of the LPG cylinder, punctured the pipe so that the gas would spread in the house and also lit incense sticks so that the house caught fire but the plan did not work.
CP Seidu said the accused was also caught on the CCTV camera as he started splashing water outside his house expecting the victims’ house to catch fire soon. An information report on the murders was recorded at Salem Al-Tabri Police Station on the complaint of Renko, Lal’s nephew. The accused was brought before a local court and sent to police custody for three days. The couple’s four children, who live abroad, are waiting to be cremated.
