The 38-year-old said today, Saturday, that United States striker Megan Rapinoe will retire after this season, days before she leaves to participate in the FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand.
The charismatic veteran will be competing in her fourth World Cup final when the tournament kicks off July 20, and said she’ll be hanging up her boots after finishing the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) season.
“I feel so grateful to be here and have the confidence of this team and my body took so long to do that,” she told reporters.
The United States is seeking an unprecedented third consecutive title when the World Cup kicks off. They play Wales in a farewell friendly on Sunday in San Jose, California.
