Bihar Police has contacted the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), seeking a ban on more than 100 gambling, gaming and loan offering applications that are allegedly involved in money laundering and pose a threat to the country’s financial security.
A senior officer said on Saturday that the Bihar Police Economic Crimes Unit recently contacted MeitY and urged it to block more than 100 such apps.
“The decision was taken after ascertaining that these apps attract Section 69 of the Information Technology (IT) Act as they contain material prejudicial to the sovereignty and integrity of India. Numerous complaints of extortion and harassment have been received from people who have borrowed very small amounts through these loan lending apps” ,
Additional Director General (ADG) of the Bihar Police, Nayyar Hasnain, told PTI. Section 69a of the Information Technology Act authorizes the government to restrict access to any online content to protect the interests of the nation’s sovereignty and integrity, state security, friendly relations with foreign countries and public order.
EOU has also received several FIR reports registered against these apps and their associated persons in Arwal, Phulwari Sharif (Patna), Aurangabad and Jamui recently, ADG said. “It is a serious crime and digital lending, gaming or gambling applications should be banned as they pose a threat to the financial security of the country. We maintain strict vigil over the activities of online lending platforms. People should also remain alert about the activities of these applications. EOU has created Awareness among people about this apps and requests the public not to take any loan from unregistered or illegal loan apps available on the internet and Playstore.
Explaining the method of work, the Assistant General Manager said that these loan applications, under the pretext of providing loans, access or hack all information from customers’ phones. Such information may be used by the accused company to commit other financial crimes. Most of the time, such apps harass customers not only by charging a high interest rate but also by sending obscene materials to their contact list if they fail to repay the loans.
Commenting on the move by Bihar Police, cyber law expert Pavan Duggal told PTI, loan apps, games and gambling are just attempts to make people into victims of cybercrime in most cases, people (victims) tend to get stuck. Therefore, we need more effective and stringent anti-cybercrime regulations in the country. I must say that many areas in cyberspace are still not regulated. We should have a separate law to combat loan application scams.”
The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has already issued an advisory stating that since betting and gambling are illegal in most parts of the country, advertisements on these platforms, as well as their alternatives, are also illegal under the provisions of the Consumer Protection Act 2019, the Cable Television Networks Regulation Act of 1995 and the Technology Rules. Information for 2021.
