Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe has claimed his performance was not appreciated because he plays in France.
Mbappe is definitely one of the best footballers on the planet right now. He has put in impressive performances for club and country over the years, including last season. The Frenchman scored 41 goals and provided 10 assists in 43 matches for Paris Saint-Germain.
He also helped France reach the final of the FIFA World Cup in Qatar against Argentina. The 24-year-old won the Golden Boot and scored eight goals, including a hat-trick, in the final.
However, as Ligue 1 is seen as a less competitive league than the Premier League, Kylian Mbappe’s performance sometimes goes unnoticed.
In an interview with France FootballWing pointed out the same thing:
“We’re in a consumer society, where ‘it’s fine, but do it again’. And the fact that I’m right next door, in Paris… I think playing for PSG doesn’t help much because it’s a divisive team, a divisive club. So, Of course it attracts gossip but it doesn’t bother me because I know what I’m doing and how to do it.”
Kylian Mbappe moved to Paris Saint-Germain from Monaco in 2017. Since then, he has won five Ligue 1 titles with the club, among others. He is also the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 212 goals in 260 matches, along with 98 assists.
Kylian Mbappe on Paris Saint-Germain’s failure to win the Champions League
Paris Saint-Germain has had some of the best players on their list over the years but they have failed to win the UEFA Champions League trophy. They came close in 2020, reaching the final against Bayern Munich but losing 1-0.
Kylian Mbappe recently pointed an accusing finger at the club’s failure to compete with its senior officials. He stated that the players, himself included, were doing everything they could except management and owners, who should be held accountable.
He said (trans 90min):
“I don’t know what PSG is missing (to win the Champions League), it’s not a big question for me. We did what we could, period. You have to talk to the people who make up the team, who organize the team, who build this club. I’m just trying. Doing my job as well as possible…”
he added:
“I can do better by my standards. But there’s no magic either. Even the other players gave everything they could. Sometimes in football you come up against what’s called a glass ceiling. That’s why it’s not much of a question for me but more of the question above.” .”
The Parisians have been eliminated in the last 16 of the Champions League stages in recent seasons by Real Madrid and Bayern Munich respectively.
