The state government has prepared a list of villages in each flood-prone district and accordingly alerted health officials to ensure disaster management cells are in place to deal with any untoward event during the monsoon. State Health Minister Tanji Sawant on Saturday held a review meeting with senior health officials to monitor the readiness of districts to deal with natural disasters during the monsoon.
Sawant ordered officials to closely monitor flood-prone areas and intensify monitoring by conducting home visits for fever cases. “Health teams have been appointed and sufficient stocks of medicines have been distributed in case of outbreaks of waterborne or waterborne diseases,” said health officials.
Officials from the Ministry of Health have identified 4,067 high risk villages vulnerable to floods out of which 702 are in Pune district – 188 are in Pune district, 336 are in Satara and 178 are in Solapur. Rapid teams were prepared and told to stay alert during emergencies. Health officials said that surveys of water containers are also being conducted to check for dengue, which is caused by the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
In the Mumbai constituency, there are 90 villages in Raigad, 206 in Thane and 273 in Palghar that are identified as high risk areas. Kolhapur district has identified 645 flood-prone villages, while there are 522 such villages in Aurangabad district. From setting up disaster management cells at district level to monitoring flood-prone areas, ensuring that health teams have adequate stocks of medicines, daily monitoring of fever cases in high-risk villages, to strict monitoring of the health of pregnant women, Dr. Radhakrishna Pawar, Deputy Director (Health ), Pune department has also sent out a series of instructions to health officials in Pune, Solapur and Satara.
Dr Pawar said the medical staff and paramedics have been trained to deal with emergencies. “Immediate action is taken in case the drinking water supply is contaminated due to heavy rains and floods. Tests are conducted frequently to ensure availability of safe drinking water,” he added.
