This week’s episode of AEW Collision got off to a hot start when CM Punk made his way to the ring to interrupt one of his most passionate promos in the Tony Khan-led promotion. Not only did The Voice of the Voiceless tease his huge match with Samoa Joe, he also took the time to pay homage to the late Owen Hart.
AEW has done a flawless job of showing respect to The King of Hearts in recent years. The Owen Hart Foundation Cup is being treated as a major trophy in the Jacksonville-based promotion. The massive match between CM Punk and Samoa Joe is a clear indication of that.
Punk was welcomed by the Regina, Saskatchewan crowd during the opening segment of Tonight’s Collision, which contrasted somewhat with how The Second City Saint was received on other nights. However, he had some important points to get off his chest.
He detailed his history with Samoa Joe, noting that he hadn’t scored a victory over his opponent in a long time. But, more explicitly, Punk emphasized the importance of Owen Hart to the lives of many superstars in the AEW locker room.
He even went so far as to lead the “Owen” chant that blared across the square – an uplifting and heart-warming touch to say the least.
It’s impossible to score the highlights of CM Punk and Samoa Joe’s distinguished in-ring careers without mentioning the other. Their famous trilogy from the early days of Ring of Honor is still viewed by many cult fans as one of the best three-part series ever within the wrestling ring.
Both men have since gone on to land exciting bouts in other promotions but now find themselves under the same roof. It remains to be seen if they can live up to the standards set in their previous encounters. However, fans will no doubt be drawn to the match regardless.
They will meet in the Owen Hart Championship semi-finals tonight at Collision, but many will see that as the emotional high point of the entire competition.
WWE Hall of Famer attacks Lacey Evans in order to make him a gimmick here.
