On July 7, USC freshman Caleb Williams took to the mound at Dodger Stadium to deliver the ceremonial first pitch of the game.
Williams, 21, isn’t just any USC freshman, he’s the quarterback for the USC Trojans football team. A native of Washington, D.C., Williams recently transferred to USC from the University of Oklahoma.
While playing for the OU Sooners in 2021, Williams won multiple Player of the Year awards, including the Heisman Trophy. He currently holds the OU school record for touchdowns with 52 total.

Last month, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced that they would be gifting a Caleb Williams bobblehead on August 10th. While it is not at all common for a college player to be honored by an MLB team, this gesture illustrates the fame that Williams commands.

On July 7, Williams and the entire USC offensive line were invited to pregame ceremonies for the Dodgers’ contest against the Los Angeles Angels. It was the second time in his young career that Williams had been called to pitch the first pitch. Earlier this season, he threw his first pitch in a game hosted by the Washington Nationals, his hometown team.

With the 2023 MLB Draft just days away, having Williams in the MLB spotlight is fitting. The tallest prospect in his class, at 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, is sure to top the NFL lineup one day.
LSU won the College World Series this year, and two of the key drivers of the team’s success – Paul Skenes and Dylan Crews – are expected to be very high in the draft. With all the excitement surrounding the prospect, it’s hard for fans to view NCAA sports somewhat romantically during this time.
