The Foreign Medical Graduate Examination (FMGE) is one of the most difficult examinations that a foreign medical graduate has to undergo in his five years of MBBS. It is a licensed exam that gives these graduates permission to practice in India as an MBBS doctor and is considered equivalent to a student who has completed MBBS in India. The aim of the exam is to achieve more than 50 per cent of the marks to obtain the licence.
There are approximately 300 questions, divided into two equal parts, to be taken on the same day with a lunch break in between. The paper covers 19 topics in total with unequal weighting of each topic being distributed depending on the importance of the topic. Most of the questions asked will be one line, such as image identification, disease treatment, important statistics, and so on.
Since the test is scheduled for July 30, here are some tips for the last few weeks:
Cover your essentials
Make sure you study your pre-clinical and semi-clinical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, pathology, microbiology, etc. at the beginning as they form a strong foundation for all other clinical subjects such as medicine, surgery, etc. understand the most important concepts, names and important dates; The numbers will help you understand other clinical topics.
Clinical topics
Once you have completed your preclinical and semi-clinical subjects, you can move on to clinical subjects. Finishing Medicine, Surgery, and Obgyn, which are the largest subjects out of the 19, will give you a sense of confidence that you will win 50 percent of the battle. Memorizing important systems such as CVS, CNS and drug treatment associated with medicine, learning and memorizing important surgical procedures, sutures and equipment in surgery, learning pathology and treatment of important gynecological diseases, important complications and obstetric treatment and signs. After that, you can move on to other topics like ENT, eye, and so on. Save secondary allied objectives for last as they can be completed in a shorter amount of time.
MCQs and practice test
After completing the individual topics, solve the MCQ questions related to that topic and see if you are able to understand the information on that topic or not. Solving MCQs is equal to watching videos and understanding concepts as it helps prepare how questions will be asked from individual topics and what type of questions will be asked. After completing one subject, take at least two or three subject tests where important topics are covered so that you are confident to move on to another subject.
Solve PYQs
Review questions asked in previous years to see what type and type of questions were asked in previous exams. This will shape your preparation for those specific topics and solve these papers during revision to gain some confidence moving on to the actual exam.
Choose the right platform
One thing to note is how important it is to choose the right platform for studies. Things you should look for in the perfect platform:
1. Faculties of Teaching
2. Quality MCQs for practice
3. Extra guidance through whatsapp/telegram groups
4. Price
Make an informed decision after reviewing multiple platforms. Don’t fall into the herd mentality trap. Choose the platform that meets your requirements and not your friends or seniors. FMGE only has a 15 to 20 percent success rate which means most students don’t clear it. So choose based on your requirements and the platform that provides you the solution.

There will be less time for revision since there are many subjects and exam every six months. So the ideal thing is to take the exam after a year of preparation as that will give you a better chance of clearing. You’ll have time to prepare and revise and then you can try every six months if you can’t clear it on the first try. The review should be very focused and on a suitable schedule. You should review only the most important topics and statistics and not the entire curriculum.
Your review schedule should be no more than two months, and in that you should quickly skim through important images, topics, concepts, and statistics for each topic. Allow more review days for subjects that weigh more on the exam (the weight distribution is available online from the official body). It is important to try larger mock tests with time limits, rather than focusing on individual subject tests. Evaluate your performance in detail after each test, identify your weakest subjects and allow another 2-3 days to review them.
