Former England cricketer Eoin Morgan was left baffled by the hosts’ ploy to deliver short deliveries at Travis Head during Day 3 of the ongoing Headingley Test on Saturday. With rain for the first two sessions and overcast skies, conditions looked ideal for the seam and swing bowlers.
Morgan opined that while Head’s vulnerability against the short ball might justify the use of the short ball’s volley against left-handers, circumstances called for an ideal Test match line and length.
Speaking live with Sky Sports, here’s what Eoin Morgan had to say when he saw England fall short to Travis Head:
“I’m really baffled by this scheme. Perfect bowling conditions, lights on. It could be a balance between both given the context and importance of this breaking up partnership. All the circumstances are in England’s favour. I understand why they take the short ball, but look at the level of swing we saw in This little period. Shadows are down.”
Former Australian cricketer Callum Ferguson also had similar thoughts about the England to Head plan. This is what he told Channel 9:
“I was surprised by the plan of attack to the head. Maybe a little bit of movement with those overhead conditions. They fell short, they didn’t slip. I was really surprised, I thought they must have gotten there with a few slips.”
Former Sri Lankan captain Kumar Sangakkara praised Travis Head for continuing to show intent and looking for runs despite the short ball barrages fired at him by the hosts.
Speaking to Sky Sports Cricket about this, Sangakkara stated:
“We can talk forever about his problems with the short ball, but he still finds a way to score runs. Every time. They go to his body, they go down the leg side, they go in his head, Travis Head still scores runs. Something to admire.”
Head scored a crucial 77 to help Australia set a competitive target of 251 for the hosts. England have already made 27 of these runs and day four promises to be a very exciting climax to another incredible test.
The visitors currently lead the five-game series 2-0.
