With the city’s water level reaching 1,162.54 feet, authorities have opened the gates to the artificial Sukhna lake.

Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, on Sunday recorded the highest rainfall in a single day in July, setting a record in 23 years. It witnessed 322 mm of rain in 24 hours.

The city previously recorded the highest rainfall ever of 262 mm on July 18, 2000.

After continuous rains, the authorities opened the gates of the artificial Sukhna Lake as the water level reached 1,162.54 feet, and the excess Sukhna water was transferred from the lake to the Ghaghar River.

With the release of water, there was a flood-like situation in the low-lying areas of Baltana and Zirakpur towns.

Police advised the public to avoid the road from Kishangarh village towards Sukhna Lake and Shastri Nagar in Manimagra due to water inundation.

Many low-lying areas in Chandigarh were flooded with underpasses submerged. Many residents reported uprooted trees, damage to private property, and rainwater entering their homes.

City-based journalist Tarun Sharma told IANS that a full-grown peepal tree in front of his house in Sector 38 was smashed by heavy rains, damaged electrical wires and his car. However, no one was injured in the tree fall accident.

Local residents claimed that they had sent a letter to the Municipal Corporation to trim the branches to reduce the load, however, the tree was not cut down as per the standards.

In neighboring Dera Basi in Punjab, waters from overgrown rain-fed ghaghar entered fields and swathed large swaths of land.

With the IMD already issuing a heavy rain warning, the Punjab government is on high alert.
