Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has stated that McLaren’s recent resurgence is a wake-up call for his team.
McLaren were dreaming of a qualifying session at their home race at Silverstone as Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri respectively qualified P2 and P3 for Sunday’s main race. With their new upgrade package, the British team has outperformed the likes of Ferrari, Mercedes and Aston Martin.
Speaking to motorsport.com, Lewis Hamilton was complimentary of his former team’s efforts. He also said Mercedes needed to do more to catch up.
“I’m not surprised. I mean, if you look at the car, it makes sense. I’m really happy for them,” said Hamilton. They’ve had such a bad run for so long, so to be back out there is really, really nice. If you put it next to a Red Bull, it will look very similar from down the sides. It works. It is a nice. We now have another team in the mix, which is what we want to see in the sport.”
“It’s not a blow. It’s just a wake-up call for us. We’ve been overtaken by others, and we need to do more. Of course I’ll try to be optimistic and do our best. But realistically, I’m not sure. We’ll find it. It was hard to overtake my Ferrari and then we got On two McLarens, he added, “It will be a tough race.”
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff agreed with Lewis Hamilton’s comments regarding the physical similarities between the McLaren and Red Bull cars. But he also noted that what you see from the outside is “only half the information”.
Talk to the media, incl Planet F1Wolf said:
“I think from what you see from the outside, which is obviously only half of the info, the car looks like a Red Bull. And as a matter of fact, to be honest, it doesn’t matter, because it only matters the stopwatch. And that’s what I think Lewis was referring to, That kind of design seems like a good trend, but that’s easier said than done.”
he added:
“I think each of us had quite good bodywork in the tunnel and it didn’t show up in the performance, so you have to leave no stone unturned and maybe look at it again, because another team has found a second in a performance.”
It will be interesting to see if Lewis Hamilton (P7) and George Russell (P6) are able to challenge McLaren and Red Bull in the race on Sunday.
