England opener Zak Crawley continued his trend of getting off the bat after being dismissed for 44 from 55 deliveries on Day 4 of the Third Ashes Test at Headingley.

Despite looking unsuspecting and in good shape, Crowley was caught behind the wheel of a harmless car by Mitchell Marsh that was the length and breadth of it. The dismissal put the hosts in trouble at 93/3, chasing 251 which the Australian scored.

The 25-year-old has averaged just under 30 with an innings to bat 12 this year, with no centuries and half centuries. However, a smashing opening strike got the team going quickly before being sacked for mediocre scores. In the ongoing series, Crowley has crossed 30 on four of the six occasions yet has not made it into triple digits.

The right-hander last scored a century against Pakistan in Rawalpindi some seven months later and 18 runs back. With three centuries and an aggregate average of just 28.65 after 37 matches, pressure is mounting on Crawley to deliver big scores and match-winning performances.

Furthermore, with the hosts down 0-2 and in a must-win situation, Crawley’s tame untimely dismissal did not sit well with fans on Twitter.

Here are some of the best reactions:

Crowley had a massive chance to hit the innings…we had two days! I know it’s not Bazball but it’s an ffs test match!!

I have plenty of time left to bat. What does Zack Crowley do? It’s a share he walks through every time I see him

Zack Crowley almost became the character of Krish Srikanth in England. Good effect player for about 30-35.

And with that wicket, Zach Crawley’s first-class opening average rose to 31.65, best among active English players (20+ runs) by Compton, Cook, Duckett, Root, Orr, Sibley, Burns, Patel, Haines, Libby, Dent, Leith, Jennings, Robson, Brown, Lees, Rhodes, Hamid, Lloyd,

@tweet It’s really hard to fathom how Crowley could get away with it almost every time. He looks very good on his eyes, has a lot of Kevin Pietersen about making strikes, and then suddenly finds a way out prematurely. Averaging 30 doesn’t do justice to his talent.

England need to understand one thing, that they will get a good 30-40 out of Zach Crawley at most when he is on form. # Ash

What a surprise… Crowley gets himself in and then gets himself out… kidding a joke… how he keeps picking him

Crowley, right? It’s time to move on and give another opening chance

If there were two balls to sum up Zack Crowley’s test career so far… 🏏 #engfaus # Ash

That’s enough Crowley for me. In each innings he himself gets in and then throws the wicket away with a weak shot. #Ashes2023

I’m sick of seeing Zack Crowley cringe behind him whenever he hits his forties.

“You’d be a brave man to lead at the time, but that’s what Zack Crowley likes to do” Hey Zack, take a look at your scoring history and maybe think about what you want to do

Like Crowley’s clock mechanism again

I really feel like Crowley is the new James Vince (insulting)

I’d love to know what dirt Zack Crowley has on Rob Ke. There is no other explanation # Ash

“A great chance to win an England Test match individually” – Michael Vaughan

Crawley had a reputation for throwing away good starts in his Test career.
Crawley had a reputation for throwing away good starts in his Test career.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed his disappointment with Zak Crawley’s poor conversion rate and lack of match-winning performance despite being a regular for England.

Crawley has played all 16 Tests since the start of the Brendon McCollum-Ben Stokes era. However, the right-hander scored his only century against Pakistan in 31 runs.

Speaking to Cricbuzz ahead of the fourth day, Vaughan felt the 25-year-old had a golden opportunity to make a match-winning contribution.

“England constantly picks Zach Crawley. He’s in the side for a long time. He’s played 37 Test matches, averaging 28. He never looks out of shape, plays great shots and comes off suddenly. But tomorrow he has a great chance so individually win England in a Test match.” And get England over the line, and get them back in the series,” he said.

Unfortunately for Crawley, his dry patch continued without a great score, with many fans wanting to drop the right-hander from the England Test side. So far in the series, the 25-year-old has scored 196 runs at an average of 32.66.

As things stand at lunch on the fourth day, the Test are in fine form, with England on 153/4, requiring another 98 runs to win and survive the series.
