England opener Zak Crawley continued his trend of getting off the bat after being dismissed for 44 from 55 deliveries on Day 4 of the Third Ashes Test at Headingley.
Despite looking unsuspecting and in good shape, Crowley was caught behind the wheel of a harmless car by Mitchell Marsh that was the length and breadth of it. The dismissal put the hosts in trouble at 93/3, chasing 251 which the Australian scored.
The 25-year-old has averaged just under 30 with an innings to bat 12 this year, with no centuries and half centuries. However, a smashing opening strike got the team going quickly before being sacked for mediocre scores. In the ongoing series, Crowley has crossed 30 on four of the six occasions yet has not made it into triple digits.
The right-hander last scored a century against Pakistan in Rawalpindi some seven months later and 18 runs back. With three centuries and an aggregate average of just 28.65 after 37 matches, pressure is mounting on Crawley to deliver big scores and match-winning performances.
Furthermore, with the hosts down 0-2 and in a must-win situation, Crawley’s tame untimely dismissal did not sit well with fans on Twitter.
Here are some of the best reactions:
“A great chance to win an England Test match individually” – Michael Vaughan
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has expressed his disappointment with Zak Crawley’s poor conversion rate and lack of match-winning performance despite being a regular for England.
Crawley has played all 16 Tests since the start of the Brendon McCollum-Ben Stokes era. However, the right-hander scored his only century against Pakistan in 31 runs.
Speaking to Cricbuzz ahead of the fourth day, Vaughan felt the 25-year-old had a golden opportunity to make a match-winning contribution.
“England constantly picks Zach Crawley. He’s in the side for a long time. He’s played 37 Test matches, averaging 28. He never looks out of shape, plays great shots and comes off suddenly. But tomorrow he has a great chance so individually win England in a Test match.” And get England over the line, and get them back in the series,” he said.
Unfortunately for Crawley, his dry patch continued without a great score, with many fans wanting to drop the right-hander from the England Test side. So far in the series, the 25-year-old has scored 196 runs at an average of 32.66.
As things stand at lunch on the fourth day, the Test are in fine form, with England on 153/4, requiring another 98 runs to win and survive the series.
