As the death toll in violence during the panchayat elections reached 17, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday slammed the Transitional Military Council-led state government and alleged that it had “deliberately not deployed” the central armed forces in sensitive areas of the state.
On the other hand, the Transitional Military Council called the opposition leaders’ allegations “baseless”.
BJP Vice President Dilip Ghosh said that if the central forces are deployed in sensitive booths, the scale of violence will not be as great.
It seems that the central forces did not deliberately deploy in sensitive places.
Instead of troops being posted to polling stations, personnel were assigned to patrol highways or posted to police stations. When they were actually deployed, the violence had ended and the TMC had already looted the votes. Ghosh said the state election commission did not follow the order of the Calcutta High Court.
BJP IT cell chief and party co-observer for West Bengal Amit Malviya has alleged that the TMC has “changed ballot boxes in several places” in Malda district. “TMC workers were caught red-handed, shifting ballot boxes in several places with the help of contractors and local management, before they could reach the strong rooms,” Malvia said in a tweet on Sunday.
Denying the allegations made by the BJP, Kunal Ghosh, Secretary General of the TMC state, said, “BJP misleads people. In most of the incidents, our workers were killed. Even if the central forces were deployed, there is no guarantee that there would be no violence. They were killed.” Four persons in firing by central forces in Cooch Behar district during West Bengal assembly elections 2021.”
