David Warner’s double flop Against Stuart Broad during Australia’s three-wicket defeat in the third Ashes Test at Headingley could force the team management to try a new opening pair at Old Trafford, starting on 19 July.
Warner scored four and one and was dismissed on the occasion by Stuart Broad, who took his wicket 17 times in Test cricket. Warner failed to shoot in a series as he averaged only 23.50 with just one fifty from six innings.
Mitchell Marsh has cemented his place somewhat with an impressive 100 and with Cameron Green poised to regain full fitness, Australia may dismiss Warner to accommodate both all-rounders.
“We’re going to keep all our options open. We’ve got nine or 10 days left now, so we’re going to take a deep breath,” Pat Cummins told reporters.
“We’ll be away for a few days but everyone’s back to that. Greaney should be fit for Manchester, we should have a full list. So we’ll look at the wickets, chat and work to find a better XI.”
Former Australian captain Michael Clarke backed Mitchell Marsh to open the batting alongside Usman Khawaja in the remaining Ashes Tests.
“Tell me what they’re doing now… The number one problem is you’re stuck with Warner, you gave him every chance, and (Stuart) Broad still got his number. Is it time?” Clark said on Sky Sports Radio.
“If the time came, I wouldn’t even think about who opens the bat because you have options.
“I think Mitch Marsh is in good shape. If he has to do it, he can do it. Alex Curry probably won’t because he has to continue, but Travis Head can do it. Marnus Labuschagne doesn’t make as many spins as he should in the position 3rd. He can open, Smithy can go to No. 3 and he can head to No. 4 (with Marsh and Green No. 5 and No. 6).”
The thing you have to think about first is is David Warner’s time up? And the other thing is, if you’re going to bring Cameron Green back, is he 100 percent fit to accumulate the amount he needs?
“I think they should either stick to Warner or play to batting order and keep Mitch Marsh.”
