Director Nitesh Tiwari on Sunday said Bawaal is a special coming-of-age film as it draws a lot from his personal life experiences.
Starring Varun Dhawan and Janhvi Kapoor, the romantic drama revolves around a high school history teacher, Ajay Ajju Dixit, who enjoys small fame in his hometown. The film navigates the course of World War II in Europe and shows the main couple grappling with their marriage, forcing Ajay to confront his inner war.
The Bawaal Trailer was launched here at the famous Ocean Line and Queen Elizabeth II Hotel.
“This movie is probably very special because there are so many personal elements involved in it. That’s the story that has to be told. It’s all about the way we look at life, the way we look at people.
“There are certain life experiences that change us. It’s (about) coming of age and an emotionally layered piece,” Nitsch said at a global press event.
Pawal has been filmed in various locations in India and abroad, including Poland, the Netherlands and Germany. Some scenes in the trailer show scenes from the Auschwitz concentration camp.
Without revealing details about the film’s World War II connection, the director said he tried to incorporate chapters from history that contribute to the arc of the film’s main characters.
“I like to keep my cards close to my chest. The idea of the trailer is to create curiosity. Please watch the movie for all your answers… I kept the action and events, which kind of play an important role in the characters’ arc and their relationships in the movie… Every incident was carefully chosen. World War The second is gigantic, and there is a lot to be said.”
Nitesh Tiwari, known for his commercially successful films like Dangal and Chhichhore, said he hopes Bawaal will entertain and urge people to “reset priorities”.
“A movie doesn’t have to end when it does. Some part of it should stay with you when you finish it. That’s what I’ve been trying to do with all my movies. I hope it not only entertains you, but also makes you pause and reset your priorities.”
The biggest challenge, according to the director, was coming up with a story. He credited his wife, writer-director Ashwini Iyer Tiwari, with creating a powerful script like Bawal.
“I am grateful to Ashwiny for writing the story and for being generous enough to give it to me. I know how hard it can be to separate the creators from their children….”
Pawal is also an ode to her father-in-law, said Ashwini, who is also co-producing the film via Earthsky Pictures to share with Sajid Nadiadwala’s Descendants.
Nitesh’s father was the Director of Education in Madhya Pradesh and a history teacher. Of course, he wasn’t like the character we created for Varun… Baba always used to teach a lot of history and wanted to travel across Europe… see and understand what really happened in those places he read about.
I was supposed to take him to Germany, (but) he got sick and I couldn’t take him to Germany. He is no longer … Bawal is also an ode to Nitsch’s father.
The actor said that the film also had a connection between Nitesh and Varun about their relationship with Kanpur, as they filmed high school sequences.
Bawaal will release on Amazon Prime Video in India and across 200 countries and regions on July 21.
Varun Dhawan said that visiting Kanpur and filming at the same school where his father, director David Dhawan, attended as a child, was an unforgettable experience.
“The school where Ajju works is the school where my father and my uncle studied. He was originally from Kanpur. We used to talk about it and reminisce about his days there,” he said, adding that three of his most favorite directors — Nitish, director Bhidaya Amar Kaushik and his father All of them are from Kanpur.
For Janhvi Kapoor, visiting Auschwitz was an emotional experience.
“When we were in Poland, we went to see Auschwitz and it was a moving experience. It taught us a lot about the seriousness of what we were talking about in the movie,” added the actor who plays Nisha in Bawal.
Also present at the launch event were Producers Sajid Nadiadwala, Warda Nadiadwala and Manish Mingani, Director of Content Licensing, Prime Video India.
