The civil administrations of Ambala in Haryana, Patiala and Jalandhar in Punjab on Sunday night requested the assistance of the Indian army in its flood relief operations amid incessant heavy rains in the region.
Sources in the army’s western command in Chandimandir told that the district administration in Ambala had requested the army to conduct rescue operations in the flooded colony.
In Punjab, additional army columns for flood relief are being dispatched to Patran in Patiala district, Chakot and Lohayan in Jalandhar district.
Students from Chitkara University in Rajpura, Patiala, were rescued by the army late Sunday night. Army columns were also deployed at Ropar to fill a breach in a canal that threatened to flood nearby villages.
With the rains showing no sign of abating, Army officials dealing with civilian departments feel more assistance may need to be provided in the coming hours.
Water entered several residential areas after heavy rains in Ambala on Sunday. The Ambala-Hisar Highway has been closed to traffic.
