FC Goa added Odisha FC’s Spanish playmaker Victor Rodriguez to their ranks. The 33-year-old will replace the outgoing Iker Guarrotxena and is set to be the Gaurs’ third foreign addition under Manolo Marquez, according to reports from Times of India.
Rodriguez started his footballing journey at the respected La Masia academy before moving on to FC Badalona in the Spanish third division. Over the course of three years, he amassed an impressive 90 appearances for the Catalan club before making his way to La Liga with Real Zaragoza.
In 2014, Rodriguez secured a move to Elche FC, with subsequent loan spells to Getafe and Sporting Gijón, cementing his presence in La Liga. Across his La Liga endeavors, he played in 143 matches, contributing 10 goals and 16 assists.
In search of new challenges in 2017, the midfielder moved to the United States, joining the Seattle Sounders. He became an integral member of the team, making 53 appearances, scoring 12 goals, and winning the MLS Cup in 2019.
After another two years in Spain with Elche, Rodriguez moved to the Indian Premier League with Odisha FC where his participation was limited due to injuries. However, he made 14 ISL appearances and played a crucial role in their Super Cup success, scoring two goals.
Rodrigues’ exceptional technical ability is crucial in his No. 10 role, and his wealth of experience will undoubtedly prove invaluable to FC Goa. On top of that, his versatility in midfield adds an extra layer of dynamism, while his passing range and fantastic vision are notable aspects of his game too.
FC Goa continues to add great depth to their squad
The arrival of Manolo Marquez signals the dawn of a new era for the team, which will be determined to challenge the firsts after a series of disappointing seasons. With big moves already being made, such as the acquisition of Sandesh Jhingan, Udanta Singh, Boris Singh and Raynier Fernandes, the team looks solid.
On top of that, the Gaurs have managed to retain influential winger Noah El Sedawy, who emerged as the ISL’s leading goal-scoring player last season.
Although the departure of Iker Guarrotxena leaves a void, Victor Rodriguez has proven to be a suitable replacement, able to fill the No. 10 role seamlessly alongside 36-year-old Carlos Martinez up front.
Reports also suggest that Hyderabad FC defender Odei Onaindia is close to a move to the club, which will strengthen their defense – an area where they struggled the previous season.
Overall, the Gaurs have put themselves ahead, with a good squad that can compete with Mumbai City FC and Mohun Bagan SG.
With Manolo Marquez at the helm, the team will aim to achieve results and showcase their potential with the strongest rivals in the league.
