Twitter user traffic has slowed since launch metaThe text-based platform, which has already surpassed 100 million subscriptions since its debut last week, according to Third party tracking.
The threads launched in the US on Wednesday and are being touted by Meta executives such as Instagram head Adam Mosseri as a more positive “public square” for communities “that haven’t really embraced Twitter.” So far, users seem to be on board. CEO Mark Zuckerberg He said on Friday that the social media platform already has 70 million subscriptions.
“War beyond our expectations,” Zuckerberg said in a post.
Twitter seems to have taken a hit. Cloudflare CEO Matthew Prince shared a screenshot on Twitter on Sunday showing that traffic on the platform was “heavy”.
Twitter responded to CNBC’s request for comment with an automated response. Mita did not immediately respond.
The thriving growth in Threads was aided by the fact that it linked to an existing social network, Meta Instagram. Users can sign up with their existing Instagram handles and can keep some of their following while others sign up on the app.
Threads reached 100 million completions faster than OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot, which surpassed 100 million monthly users in two months.
The app still has plenty of room to grow, having yet to launch in Europe, where Mosseri said there was still some organizational complexity to navigate. If Threads can retain its user base, it can solidify itself as a true competitor to Twitter, which reported roughly 238 million monetizable daily active users in its last quarterly earnings report as a public company last summer.
Twitter owner Elon Musk already appears to have shown some concern about the leads, as his longtime attorney Alex Spiro wrote a letter to Meta accusing the company of “illegal misappropriation” of trade secrets.
Musk and Zuckerberg also took pictures of each other over the weekend, with Zuckerberg mocking Musk’s style on Twitter and calling Musk Zuckerberg an insulting name.
