Amarnath Yatra remains suspended as Jammu-Srinagar highway is closed. No pilgrims will leave Jammu for Kashmir due to the restoration work

Authorities said the Amarnath Yatra will remain suspended as no batch of pilgrims will leave Jammu for Kashmir on Tuesday following the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.

No new batch will leave Jammu for Kashmir on their journey to the cave shrine of Amarnath. A senior PTI official said here.

This is done in light of the closure of the highway to carry out full restoration work for the damaged stretches.

More than 7,000 pilgrims are stranded in Jammu, mainly at Bhagwatinagar Base Camp, while more than 5,000 pilgrims are stuck at Chanderkot Base Camp in Ramban district.

Traffic authorities also issued an advisory saying that the collective efforts of the department and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), which were made throughout the day, had resulted in a significant improvement in the condition of the road.

However, the full restoration process is expected to take some time.

She added that based on this, the department decided to keep the traffic on the national highway stopped for Tuesday.

Heavy vehicles are advised to take the Mughal route for the journey from Jammu to Srinagar and vice versa.

It added that traffic is likely to resume on Wednesday, but the next update will be issued on Tuesday evening.
