Amid forecasts from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) of moderate rain on Tuesday, residents of the city woke up to sunny skies and saw little rain. While the Met Office has issued a green alert indicating light to moderate showers in Mumbai and its vicinity from July 11 through Saturday (July 15), scientists at IMD Mumbai told The Indian Express that a strong revival of the monsoon is expected between July 18 and July. 20.
Speaking to The Indian Express, Sushma Nair, a scientist at IMD Mumbai said, “There is low pressure developing in the Bay of Bengal. Therefore, conditions look favorable for the onset of moderate rains from July 13 in the city and a revival of strong monsoons between July 18 and July 20.”
On Tuesday, the city and its suburbs witnessed a dry day, as it was not raining. While the IMD coastal station in Colaba recorded zero millimeters of rain, the Santacruz Observatory recorded negligible amounts of rain. In meteorology, the trace indicates that while the amount of heavy rain was greater than zero mm, the percentages were too few to be recorded by standard units of measure.
Meanwhile, the recording device of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday noted that the maximum rainfall reached the eastern suburbs at 5.28mm, followed by the western suburbs which received 3.75mm of rain. Moreover, the Gezira City section recorded 2.48 mm of precipitation. In a five-day forecast issued Monday, the Met Office predicted a week of light to moderate rain this week.
In the depleting rains, water stock levels have also been affected, with the level in the Seven Lakes that supplies Mumbai with water seen a marginal rise. Data provided by the civic authority showed that on Tuesday, lake levels reached 26.43% of the total capacity which is an increase of 1% since Monday when lake levels reached 25%. For perspective, in 2022, on the same date, lake levels would be 35.63%.
This year, the onset of the monsoon was delayed by two weeks, which weather experts attributed to Cyclone Mawar and Gochul as well as Cyclone Pebargui. While the official date of arrival of the monsoon in Mumbai is 11 June, this year its onset occurred on 25 June.
