India captain Rohit Sharma has confirmed that Shubman Gill will bat at number three in the first Test against the West Indies, which starts in Dominica on Wednesday, July 12. The arrangement means opener Yashasvi Jaiswal will get his Test debut – the same as confirmed by Rohit.

In KL Rahul’s absence, Gill opened the roles with Rohit and also tasted success. However, the Indian captain revealed that the batsman himself approached coach Rahul Dravid and requested that he be sent to bat in a one-down stand.

Chitchwar Pujara, who had been doing the job for India for many years at No. 3 pivotal position, was not selected for the West Indies tour. In a press conference ahead of the first Test, Rohit opened up about the squad and confirmed:

“In terms of batting positions, Gill will bat at No. 3, because Gill himself wants to bat at No. 3. He had a conversation with Rahul Bhai (Draved) and told him that, I’ve played all my cricket at No. 3 and 4. I think That I can do better for the team if I play in the third position.”

The Indian captain assured that the arrangement works well as the visitors can get an opening combination left and right into Rohit-Jaiswal. He said:

“It’s good for us too because we’re getting a left-to-right opening combination. Hopefully this works for a long time because we’ve been desperately needing a left-hander for a long time. We’ve got one and hopefully he (Jaiswal) does well for the team and can make this place king.” for him “.

On the bowling mix, Rohit admitted that they are likely to bowl two spinners. He said:

“Looking at the wickets, it looks like we might be playing two spinners and three seamers. During the last Test match played here in 2017 a lot of wickets were taken by spinners. Having been practicing here for a few days we felt there was a bit of a bounce.”

In the absence of Mohammed Al-Shami, Mohammed Siraj will lead the fast Indian attack in the Tests.

“Ruturaj has all the potential to succeed in red-ball cricket” – Rohit Sharma

India selected quite a few youngsters in the batting section for the West Indies Tests. Speaking about the same, Rohit said that the names chosen are very exciting for Indian cricket going forward. Sharing his thoughts on the likes of Ruturaj Gaikwad, Jaiswal and Gill, he opined:

“They’ve put up solid yards in domestic cricket and they’ve been rewarded for it. All these guys have been on the radar. I’m glad they managed to make it happen. Jaiswal looks very promising, as well as Ruturaj and Gill. Gill has clearly been playing fine cricket for a year.” Now. I hope he continues his good form and Ruturaj also has all the potential to succeed in red-ball cricket. He showed us in T20 cricket, what he can do.”

Rohit concluded:

“I am sure he is also looking forward to getting more and more runs for the Indian team.”

While Jaiswal was set to make his Test debut, Gaikwad made one ODI and nine T20Is.
