flood: north South Korea launched a long-range ballistic missile towards its eastern waters on Wednesday, its neighbors said, two days after North Korea threatened “horrific” consequences for protesting what it described as provocative US reconnaissance activity near its territory.
The Joint Chiefs of Staff of South Korea said in a statement that the South Korean army detected the launch of a long-range missile from the northern capital region at about ten o’clock in the morning. It said the South Korean military has strengthened its monitoring posture and maintained readiness in close coordination with the United States.
Japanese Defense Minister Yasukazu Hamada told reporters that the North Korean missile was likely fired at an elevated trajectory, at a steep angle North Korea usually uses to avoid neighboring countries when it tests long-range missiles.
Hamada said the missile is expected to land in the sea about 550 kilometers (340 miles) east of the coast of the Korean Peninsula, outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone.
North Korea’s Long-Range Missile Program Targets Mainland US Since 2017, North Korea has carried out a large number of ICBM launches as part of its efforts to acquire nuclear-tipped weapons capable of striking major US cities. Some experts say that North Korea still has some technology to master in order to have nuclear-powered ICBMs.
Ahead of Wednesday’s launch, North Korea conducted its latest long-range missile test in April, when it fired a solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missile, a type of weapon that experts say is harder to detect and intercept than liquid-fuel weapons.
Wednesday’s launch, the North’s first weapons launch in about a month, came after North Korea earlier this week issued a series of statements accusing the United States of flying military aircraft near North Korea to spy on North Korea.
The United States and South Korea rejected North Korea’s accusations and urged them to refrain from any actions or rhetoric that stir up hostility.

“Kim Yo Jong’s aggressive statement against US surveillance planes is part of a North Korean pattern of exaggerating external threats to drum up domestic support and justify weapons tests,” said Leif Eric Easley, a professor at Ewha University in Seoul. Pyongyang is also repeating its offers of force to disrupt what it views as diplomatic coordination against it, in this case, the meeting of South Korean and Japanese leaders during a NATO summit.
