Police said on Wednesday that the leader of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh was shot dead by unknown criminals in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand state.

Police said Shankar Prasad, 55, who is Sampark Pramukh of RSS Dhanbad, was shot dead on Tuesday night in his village in Doma under East Tunde Police Station area, about 180 km from the capital, Ranchi.

His bullet-ridden body was found on Wednesday morning, about 500 meters from his home near Duma cemetery, said Krishna Kumar, the officer in charge of East Tunde Police Station.

“The body has been sent for autopsy at Sahid Nirmal Mahto Medical College and Hospital, Dhanbad,” he said.

Prasad, who survived by three sons and two daughters, was a gardening officer of the East Tunde Block, under whom many Krishti Mitras worked. The villagers said that he was also a member of Kalyan Kendra’s Fanphase.

According to his family’s statement to the police, Prasad left his home on a motorbike around 9:30 pm on Tuesday. They said that on Wednesday morning his bullet-riddled body was found near the village cemetery.

They added that he had a land dispute in the village and an FIR was filed at the Eastern Police Station.

The RSS zilla sah seva pramukh Rampratap Kumbhkar, a resident of eastern Tondi, demanded immediate arrest of the killers and alleged that Prasad’s murder was a conspiracy.

East Tondi block in Dhanbad was a Maoist hit area. A member of Gram Raksha Dal, Prasad was against illegal sand mining in the area.
