Due to the persistent problem of exorbitant wages of motorists and rising costs of ride-hailing apps in Bengaluru, a new player has emerged in the market and is becoming popular within a quick time.
Nama Yatri, an application developed by the Motorists Union, is hosted on the Open Network for Digital Trade (ONDC), an initiative of the Ministry for the Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT).
Unlike Ola, Uber and Rapido, the platform does not charge fees. This has resulted in drivers earning more while passengers pay less compared to other apps.
“I used to earn 1,000-1,200 rupees per day using Ola and Uber, but with Namma Yatri, the income has improved because there are no commission fees,” said Mouni Swami, a motorist who has been using the app for the past five months. More government support due to prevailing inflation.
Namma Yatri was launched in November 2022 by Bengaluru Motorists Union and built by JoySpy Technologies. It is hosted at ONDC, a non-profit organization supported by the Indian Ministry of Commerce to democratize digital commerce. The app is open source, allowing trips to be combined through different apps, including digital payment providers.
Presently, the app is in use by more than 10 lakhs, and more than 65,000 drivers have registered, benefiting from the commission-free model.
Himasha Patel, a regular user and founder of the app said, “This app is true to its motto: ‘Book a car without commission’. It helps both rickshaw drivers and users.”
“As a student, we have issues with motorists who charge extra for fairs and cancel rides, just because they don’t want to drop us off at the destination we selected. But with the Namma Yatri app, that’s not the case. Because they don’t They know the destination, moreover, the flight is easy to find.
However, some users reported a technical glitch. “The app crashes sometimes, especially when it is raining. It shows that the ride is not booked even after it has been confirmed. It is a rare occurrence, but it is a technical glitch that can be fixed,” commented Prachi Duggal, another user.
