A 22-year-old engineering student allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday, after being unable to repay loans and being tortured by online money lending companies in Karnataka state.
The deceased, identified as Tejas Nair, had borrowed money from private lending apps, and was unable to pay it back.
He borrowed money more than once, including some money for his friend Mahesh, but failed to pay his monthly installments in the last year.
According to his father, Gopinath Nair, his son first borrowed money from his cousins, and to pay it off, he went to apps.
“He borrowed about 30,000 rupees including interest and late fees which he had to pay back about 45,000 rupees,” said Gopinath.
“He (the son) borrowed money from loan applications and gave it to his friend. But since he was not able to pay back the amount and the money was borrowed in his name, he was tortured every day by loan applications.”
Tejas wrote a suicide note that read: “Sorry Mom and Dad for everything I’ve done but I have no other choice than this. I can’t pay any more loans in my name and this is my final decision. Good bye…”
Following the incident, his parents filed a complaint at the Jahali Police Station.
