Vice President Kamala Harris said before a meeting Wednesday at the White House with civil society leaders in space that the United States does not need to make a “wrong choice” between AI innovation and safety.
“It’s a wrong choice to suggest either we can advance innovation or we protect consumers,” Harris said. “We can do both.”
Harris said rejecting this “wrong choice” would be a “guiding principle” for the administration.
“We must in no way discourage or slow down innovation that can improve people’s lives,” Harris said. We must also ensure in the process that we do not trample people’s rights.”
Wednesday’s meeting includes groups advocating on behalf of specific demographics or on digital rights issues. The White House confirmed the following list of participants:

- Janet Murguía, President and CEO, UnitedUS
- Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO, AARP
- Lisa Rice, President and CEO, National Fair Housing Alliance
- Liz Schuller, President, AFL-CIO
- Mary Ann Franks, President, Cyber Civil Rights Initiative
- Maia Wiley, President and CEO, Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights
- Sneha Revanur, Founder and President of Encode Justice
- Susan Henderson, Executive Director, Disability Rights Education and Advocacy Fund
This follows a similar discussion hosted by Harris with CEOs of major technology companies working in the field of artificial intelligence, including MicrosoftAnd Google and OpenAI. AI experts have encouraged the government to listen to a variety of voices about the technology so as not to be overly swayed by industry priorities.
It comes as Congress weighs its role in creating safeguards around artificial intelligence. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is Work on a legislative framework to address issues related to artificial intelligence, although the timetable for its release is not yet clear.
Harris said the group will discuss transparency in AI, so the public can understand what goes on in these systems and how they make decisions. She said her concerns about the technology include its impact on privacy and workers, misinformation and discrimination.
