7/13 anniversary of the Mumbai blasts: The 13 July 2011 blasts took place at three different locations in Mumbai: Opera House, Xaveri Bazaar and Dadar between 6:54pm and 7:06pm IST.

On this day in 2011: Today, 12th July 2023, marks the 12th anniversary of the 2011 Mumbai bombings. The attacks on 13th July 2011 left 26 people dead and 130 injured. The blasts took place at three different locations in Mumbai: the Opera House, Zaveri Bazaar and Dadar between 6:54pm and 7:06pm IST.

  1. The first explosion took place in the Zaveri market where a bomb hidden in a motorbike went off at 6:54pm.
  2. Just a minute later, at 6:55 pm, a tiffin box containing another explosive device was planted in the Opera House area, triggering the second explosion.
  3. The latest explosion of the Mumbai bombings took place on 13/7 at 7:06 PM, due to an explosive device placed on an electric pole in Dadar area.

Investigation

An intensive investigation was launched to uncover the perpetrators of this terrorist act. Aware of the seriousness of the incident, the Ministry of Interior classified the bombings as a terrorist act. The National Investigation Agency was deployed to the bomb sites to take over the investigation.

The investigation gained momentum when Maharashtra ATS arrested a person who they alleged had stolen the motorbike used in the Zaveri Bazaar blast.

The breakthrough in the case came on 23 January 2012, when the Mumbai Police announced the arrest of two suspects originally from Bihar’s Darbhanga district. The logistics of their operation was allegedly managed by Yasin Bhatkal, the co-founder of the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and the mastermind behind the blasts.

A charge sheet was filed in the case in May 2012. Two years later, an accused who was allegedly financing the attacks was arrested at Goa’s Dabolim Airport in 2014.

Trial in the case began earlier this year in a special court under the Maharashtra Organized Crime Control Act (MCOCA). The accused in the case faces charges of murder, causing harm under the Indian Penal Code and offenses under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and MCOCA.

The eruptions were a tragic event that left a lasting mark on the city and the nation as a whole. It highlighted the continuing threat of terrorism and the need to strengthen security measures to prevent such attacks in the future.
