The National Committee for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) said Thursday that it will investigate the death of a 10th-grade student who allegedly committed suicide after being slapped by a teacher for coming to school with a bandage on her forehead.
The incident took place at Tutulmari in Dhanbad on July 10, after a teacher slapped the 17-year-old while praying on a bundi. The police have already arrested the teacher and the principal of the school.
“We have received information that a student committed suicide in Dhanbad after being beaten and humiliated for going to school with a bindi. The National Center for Natural Disaster Prevention (NCPCR) is aware of the incident and we will investigate,” the committee chairman, Priyank Kanungu, told PTI.
Kanungo said a team from NCPCR will visit Dhanbad to investigate the matter. Police said the girl left a suicide note in which she allegedly blamed the teacher and school principal responsible for the accident.
In the suicide note, addressed to the officer in charge of Tutolmare police station, she said she could not bear the humiliation in public and would rather die, according to the police.
Police said they also demanded action against the teacher and principal.
After returning home from school, the girl hanged herself from the ceiling fan in her room. The police seized the suicide note and filed an FIR against the teacher and principal.
The girl’s family claimed that when her mother went to the school to file a complaint against the teacher for slapping and insulting her daughter, the principal sent her back.
The family also blocked a path with the girl’s body, claiming that the police had not acted even 24 hours after the accident.
Later, Baghmara District Deputy Police Commissioner Nisha Murmo arrived at the scene and assured the angry parents that action would be taken against the culprits. Then the accused were arrested from the school.
