Russia attacked Kiev for the third night in a row, wounding four people, Ukrainian officials said. An elderly woman was killed in Russian bombing in southern Ukraine on Thursday.
The Air Force said air defenses shot down all 20 drones that attacked Kiev and the surrounding area, as well as two Kalibr missiles in other parts of the country.
The Interior Ministry said two people suffered smoke inhalation during fires caused by falling debris after two drones went down over Kiev, and two people were wounded by shrapnel.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said one person was killed in a fire last night, but the ministry indicated the fire may not have been caused by falling debris, saying the cause was still being determined.
“Tonight, Russian terrorists again resorted to a massive attack,” said Ruslan Kravchenko, governor of the Kiev region. British Ambassador Melinda Symons wrote on Twitter: “Very bad night.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office said a missile and several drones were shot down in the Mykolaiv region in southern Ukraine, damaging several buildings but causing no deaths.
Several hours later, an 85-year-old woman was killed when Russian forces shelled the village of Mikkelskyi in the southern Kherson region around noon (0900 GMT), the region’s governor Oleksandr Prokudin said.
Russia, which launched its all-out invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, has not commented on the latest attacks.
And he did not abate the air strikes as NATO leaders met in Lithuania this week for a summit that Zelensky said provided Ukraine a “baseline for security” for the first time since it gained independence in 1991. Heavy fighting continued as well.
Although Kiev says its forces have made progress in the east and south since launching a counteroffensive in June, Russia still occupies vast swathes of territory, and Zelensky said the counteroffensive has proceeded more slowly than he initially hoped.
Serhiy Chervaty, spokesman for the Eastern Military Command, said that Ukraine had enjoyed “partial success” on the southern flanks of the shattered eastern city of Bakhmut and that Ukrainian forces had taken the strategic initiative there.
He said Russian forces were putting up “incredible resistance” but had failed in an attempt to break through the Ukrainian lines near Liman and Kobyansk in the east. Such a breakthrough would boost Russia’s hopes of advancing toward the West.
