Tom Holland talks about his decision to give up drinking on the latest episode of On purpose with Jay Shetty podcast, calling it “the best thing I’ve ever done.” Spider-Man: Far From Home The actor shared that his sober journey began after a lot of indulgences during the holiday season last year.
“I didn’t wake up one day and say, ‘I give up drinking“. I just, like many Brits, had a very tumultuous December. (It was) Christmas time, I was on vacation, I drank a lot, I always managed to drink a lot,” he recalled.
Holland added, “I think I get my genes from my mom’s side on this thing — I can drink. And I decided to forgo it for January.”
But it was a dry January that proved challenging for the 27-year-old. “All I could think about was having a drink. That’s all I could think about,” he admitted. “I was waking up thinking about it. I was checking the clock, when is 12 p.m.?”
He became increasingly concerned about his cravings to drink. “It really scared me. I was just like, ‘Wow, maybe.'” I may have a few alcohol something.’ So I kind of decided to chastise myself and say, “I’ll do February, too. I’ll do two months off. If I can have two months off, I can prove to myself that I don’t have a problem.”
Despite Holland’s determination to continue abstaining from alcohol, he could not ignore the growing influence of England’s drinking-centric culture. “It’s been two months and I’m still really struggling. I felt like I couldn’t be social,” he said. “I felt like I couldn’t go to the pub and get a drink lime soda. I couldn’t go out to dinner. I was really struggling, and I was really starting to worry that I might have an alcohol problem.”
“I said to myself, ‘If I can work six months without alcohol, I can prove to myself that I don’t have a problem. ‘” And by the time I got to June 1, I was the happiest I’ve ever been,” Holland continued.
Holland recognizes the many benefits gained from abstaining from alcohol, including improved sleep, improved problem-solving skills, enhanced mental clarity, and overall physical well-being. He reflects on his journey and wonders why he was so enslaved to the idea of drinking and why he was so obsessed with it.
“I kind of said to myself, ‘Why? Why am I bonded to this drink? Why am I so obsessed with the idea of having this drink? Don is.
While sobriety has forced him to give up certain aspects of his social life, such as watching rugby due to the drinking culture surrounding it, Holland expresses no regrets. “I felt a lot of pressure, and that’s one (of the) reasons why I kind of distance myself from the rugby community because a lot of it has to do with how much you can drink. Let’s get as drunk as we can.”
He added, “Honestly, it was the best thing I’ve ever done.”
Holland’s decision to quit drinking inspired his mother to follow her example and embrace sobriety, which led to positive changes in her life as well.
“She loves it, and it’s been great. I can’t believe the difference I feel from not drinking. Yeah, I feel amazing,” the actor shared.
